Over eight years' experience playing Eb & BBb tubas:Rare-earth wrote:. . . I was wondering how much playing experence Tubenet members' have under their belts.
Seven years in grade school and high school bands (1958-65); 1.5 years in community bands and Tubachristmases (2003-05).

Is this tuba-playing only, or will other musical activities count, too ?
4 years church choir, then
5 years flugelhorn/trumpet, after that
16 years tuba

Since 1956... with 25 years off to raise a family that wasn't one bit interested in instrumental music! Glad THAT part of my life is over!

Experience is important; but clearly there are other factors that determine the quality of a tubist. Two examples come to mind. First, Carol Jantsch, who I suspect has had a lot of great experiences, but in a very short period of elapsed time. Second, Alan Baer who has a lot less years of playing experience than many Tubenetters, but is clearly a better tubist than most, if not all, other Tubenetters.

Let's see here. I was born in 1974. My mother had me on the piano pretty early I can't even remember.
1982-1985 Violin lessons
1987 Started on trombone
1988 Learned tuba to replace the tubist in the jr. high band. I didn't want to be known as a tubist, so I still considered myself a trombonist until college, but kept up with the tuba.
1992 UCLA offers me a full tuba scholarship and trombone goes in the closet.
2005 The trombones are still in the closet. But I take them out from time to time to work out my right arm.

My tuba bio reads a lot like tubatinker's--started in 1956 (6th grade) until about 1976, then a 25 year hiatus until resuming in 2000, with a lot of bass playing in the middle for income! I'm having a great time and regret deeply having let my playing go for all that time. I am just getting back to where I was in 1976, but a lot smarter!

Michael, please forgive me if this is too personal a question, but your post just engaged my curiousity, especially as you are just across the Delaware from me.Do you mean what it appears to mean by a 6-year coma hiatus? This is certainly something well out of the ordinary! I hope you are doing alright?windshieldbug wrote:29 years brass
