This is a PT-1 (aka 3103)...and yeah, it's pretty similar to a VMI 2103, isn't it?
I don't think I've seen anyone here refer to the B&S 'Sonora' as a PT-1 :?: The B&S PT-1 has always had the vertical MTS, and is very similar (like you said) to the VMI 2103. The wrap is a little more open on the PT-1/VMI, with the top bow going higher. The 'Sonora' model has the horizontal MTS and a tighter, more compact bugle wrap.
I think the only difference between the PT-1 and VMI is the bell diameter, 19" vs. 17.7".

What complicates it even more is that there was a lot of mixing of parts between the various (vertical vs. horizontal MTS) VMI/B&S rotary BBb tubas under various stencil names
There are some VMI 2103 tubas with a horizontal MTS, and with a different name on the bell.
But most of them have a vertical MTS and say VMI on the bell.
