I think there are two parts to it, plating and fitting, and there are shops that send the plating out but do their own fitting. Including tubas. But I sure am not in that business and have no insider information, just a vague impression from when I had some pistons rebuilt.

At work, we use Hegman grind blocks to test the "cleanliness" of coatings. In the past, these blocks would occasionally have to be sent out to be trued. We called the company on the block and they said "we don't provide that service anymore....it's now actually cheaper to buy a new block".hrender wrote:If Anderson isn't going to do this anymore, then it's a great business opportunity for someone else. Yeah. I got that call a couple of weeks ago and immediately started thinking about options. The plating itself isn't a major issue. Nickel can be applied by many establishments around the country. Heck... I used to do nickel plating back in the 80's in my basement. It's not really rocket science. The difficult part is honing and sizing the pistons and casings. That's the art.
