Wedge H2 versus Stofer-Geib

Post by roughrider »

I began playing a Boosey&Hawkes 3 valve upright BBb with a Stofer-Geib mouthpiece with an English shank about eight years ago. Soon after, I switched to the Wedge which I have enjoyed using as well, however the bottom end of the horn always sounded somewhat thin to me. While practicing today, I switched back to the Stofer-Geib and was amazed at how much better the bottom end (pedals, etc) sounded with that particular mouthpiece. Is it the result of solid practice on my part or the characteristic of that mouthpiece? I do not know, however it is sure nice to have that monster bottom end back on my 1944 Boosey&Hawkes tuba. Looks like a trash can and plays more in tune than just about any other tuba I have ever played.
