I'm gettin' too old to compete with the blasting trumpets and trombones in an oompah group I play with. What are your recommendations for a mic and bass amp that won't break the bank?

I say go used...and I would think that you might want something with at least a 12" speaker, preferably 15. Carvin stuff is good, but i've heard some horror stories.

What's your ideal spending range for the amp?

A bassist friend uses an Acoustic Image amp and gets a great sound out of it--and it's not huge. They're pricey new, but maybe you can find a used one that fits your budget:

I'll agree that the Carvin amps are great for the money, and they sound great, but I would warn you that I've had quite a bit of trouble with the electronics part of both my bass and amp.

Ah...well I would definitly suggest a used Peavey or something like that...lemme check some stuff out, I'll email you some suggestions

I play trombone in a ska band which requires microphoning because I can't compete with bass, guitar, drums and all that stuff. Especailly whn the drums are miced. I would suggest a shure SM57. They run abotu 90 dolalrs new....but you could easily find one used for much cheaper.... I got mine new on ebay for 40 bucks and its in great condition.

As far as bass amps.....I have no Idea. From what I have heard from my bands bassist is that ampeg makes good speaker cabs and fender bassman head are the best.....but i think those will cost big bucks.

I would check out a daddy's junky music store....depending on where you're located. I have gotten all my soudn equipment from my band there. The staff is layed back and don't pressure you. However, they are extremely helpful and informative.

I used to use a mic at pep band. I just droppped a mic down the bell and plugged into the bass amp from the band room. if you just drop it down the bell it picks up the vibrations really well, you won't get much tone a lot of bass. I have an old peavey bass amp that I just had to replace the power cord on that I use other places. getting a decent bass amp will probably be expensive.

Thanks for all of your comments about amping a tuba/sousa. I've done lots of gigs where the sound guys would put a mic above my tuba but it was difficult for me to measure the results. I just left that up to the sound guys. All along I thought this was rocket science. After reading all the comments I decided to give it a go myself.

My Dixie group already owns a Roland KC550 keyboard amp but it usually stays in the trailer unless we have a keyboard player (which is seldom). Anyway.... I got the amp out this morning and took it to my shop. I also dropped an Audio Technica cardoid studio mic down the bell of my crappy old 36K plastic Conn sousa and coupled it to the amp with a 'Little Imp Whirlwind' impedance transformer. the results were awesome! Matbe I'll take the setup to 'The Ratseller' next week!

Does anyone know any other situations that doesn't involve dropping a mic down my bell. I do "electronic tuba" stuff at school and don't have the money to buy a "beater" to use for live gigs. I would rather not drop a mic down the bell of my MW2000 or PT-10. Anyone had any luck with the clip on mics? Also, how easy is it to get a bass pick-up connected to an amp (thinking about mounting one inside an old mute)?
