Does anyone have any suggestions for a good F Tuba mouthpiece? I just got a new B&S 3100 and it came with a PT-64. I like the PT-64, but it's a little narrow for my taste.

Right. I was referring to the cup diameter.

Thanks to Chris Hite for comments on our mouthpieces for F-tuba. The revised RT-64 might feel a bit narrow simply because the inner rim is clearly defined to the being almost sharp. The factual cup diameter measured at the point where the rim begins is 32.00 Mm.

The PT-65 has a similar cup and the same cup diameter but has a semi-cushion rim. The inner edge is rounder than the revised RT-64 and therefore feels wider. Last week I reworked the 65 again, retained the same rim but made some changes in the backbore. With more and more people playing F-tuba for a greater number of ensembles, a further improvement in low register response has been accomplished.
Here in Germany and Austria there are many tubists playing in small ensembles, four to six musicians, sometimes amplified, who need solid response and a good sound down to low Bb or thereabouts. The RT-64 works very well and the revised RT-65 is intended to fulfill this criteria as well.

My mouthpiece revision project is coming along well. Later this month and together with Andreas Martin Hofrmeir we will work up a contrabass tuba mouthpiece to go along with the AMH "Paul" for F-tuba.

Recently a PT-65 obtained from another source was brought to my attention. This has a much smaller cup diameter and totally different backbore. We will provide the buyer with a new RT-65.

Try an older PT65-S if you can find one. It works great with a 3100.

Thanks for suggesting the PT-65S. The smaller shank does in fact work very well on the "B & S" 3100 (PT-9). If the instrument is very old and has a really small receiver, I have the PT-65XS in stock. This has an even smaller shank. The shank dimensions were posted some time ago but for reference, these are 15.2mm, 14.8mm and 14.5mm as measured from the top of the shank.

I just tested the Rt64, RT65 and the RT40. The 40 has a much deeper cone shape and did not work for my kanstul 66, mirophone 383 or my Bubbie 5. Between the 64 and 65, the 64 has a bigger back bore, so for me it has less back pressure than the 65. That made a big difference on the bubbie 5. I liked the sound of the 64 and the 65 over the 40. My choice was the RT64. This is my experience based on my side by side testing on my horns. Your experience my be different.
