Anyone know what a 3 valve Besson New Standard Eb weighs? I've got the tuba but no way to even semi-accurately weigh it, and am really curious. Oh, by the way, the ball has been cut off. :|

Thanks

I have to confess, that my 31lb weight for the Holton 109, did not come from a semi-accurate weighing. I don't know what an old bathroom scale is good for, probably lucky to get ±5%.

Oh, by the way, the ball has been cut off.

There must be a name for that operation.

King 1235B 3FP Eb .................. 15.3#

Cerveny Tornister 3RV BBb ......... 7.4#
Cerveny Kaiser 3RV BBb ........... 19.4#
Cerveny Kaiser 4RV F/Eb .......... 15.4#
Cerveny Helicon 4RV F ............. 13.2#
Cerveny Kaiser Helicon 4RV F ..... 16.5#
Lignatone Tuba 4RV F ............... 12.8#
J. Low Kaiser Tuba 4RV BBb ....... 17.8#
York Monster 3TP Eb ............... 15.7#
York Monster 3FP Eb ............... 15.6#
Pepper Helicon 3FP Eb ............ 12.5#
Buescher Helicon 3FP Eb ......... 13.5#
Gronitz Tuba 4RV BBb ............. 17.0#
Yamaha YCB-661 5RV CC .......... 21.2#
Keiv Helicon 3RV BBb ............. 16.8#
B&S Model 101 4RV CC ............ 17.2#
St. Pete Model 200 3RV BBb ...... 14.4#

Tom, do you have photos of your Cerveny 6/4 Kaiser Helicon? I would love to see them if so.

Here are my tubas' weights, based on my bathroom scale:

Yamaha 621 CC - 15.6 lbs.

BMB J 445 F (large bell) - 19.2

Miraphone 186 5U CC (1965 vintage) - 20.1 lbs.

And, just for fun:
Stofer/Jupiter CC sousaphone (thick fiberglass body with brass bell) - 24.5 lbs.

I hope to be adding another CC under 20 lbs. soon

By the bathroom scale method, my Nirschl York weighs 24.6 pounds. No idea how accurate that is...

I have a clone of a Miraphone 191 BBb, 4 rotary valves. I think it could be called a "5/4" size tuba.
It weighs about 15 pounds and sounds great when I play it. (It's a plastic Tiger.)

Just a note to some of you with arthritis, back problems, minor heart problems, and other issues.

If you move to THE MOON, your tuba will only weigh 16.5% of what it weighs on earth. :wink:

I've also heard that taxes are lower, just fwiw...

So I just weighed several of my tubas (not all), plus a friend's tuba I keep here 'in storage' for him.

FrankenHolton 4pv Eb --> 17 lbs
'Dillon' Holton 5v Eb --> 18.5 lbs
[Friend's tuba] Mirafone (circa 1960) 186 BBb --> 18.5 lbs
Altered/customized M-W 2155R CC --> 23 lbs

I wonder what Mr. Jacobs' first-bought York tuba weighed before it had the crap buffed out of it.
I'm sure it wasn't a heavy tuba to begin with...York .750" bore pistons (even though extra long - for no apparent reason) are feather-light...
...but that tuba, originally, was a satin-silver finish tuba.

What do those Besson 3v comp horns weigh? I remember schlepping one home in high school a few times while thinking I should have borrowed a hand truck.

I asked the same question early on in this thread but I don't think it ever got answered. Surely there's someone out there who has one and can weigh it. I'm interested in the Eb but would be good to have the Bb as well.

I don't want to know how much my horn weighs. If I ever find out, I might be tempted to give it up.

I used to march a King 2350 in high school a few years ago. I did weigh it while I had it. With everything such as mouthpiece/bits/neck/bell, the weight came out to ~55lbs. I think my tuba (forget brand, I think king too) for concert band, which looked similar to a 186, weighed around 25-30lbs. I never really had back trouble after the first few weeks, shoulder stopped hurting after a month or so during 2.5hr practices and competition days. Still 19 though, and I would love to get my hands on a Wessex BAT or a 7/4, but alas, I haven't the funds with college and all. Plus, not all that practical for my use case, but I still want it! :D

Am I right in thinking these are ballpark estimates? And that you never actually used a scale?...
