I see you slyly omitted the obvious answer.
French + tuba = French tuba. Simple.

I've played it on bass trombone and tuba. It sounds better on tuba.
For contrast, the Ewazen Concerto sounds better on bass trombone.

the "French" tuba promoter openly admitting that "French tuba" is NOT "tuba"...?? ...so all of the other widely-varying shapes and sizes of tubas are TUBAS but a FRENCH tuba, really doesn't fit in the category (choice #1, above) of "tuba"...??
Nooo: I make the distinction because just voting for "tuba" in your poll encourages the macho he-men who think it's perfectly fine to play French repertoire on a 6/4 Blast-o-phone which is twice the length and many times the internal volume of the instrument for which these parts were written.

I did it with trombone accompaniment on a Rudy 5/4 years ago - worked better than you'd think.
Did it more recently on my 182 - it was much better.
I would love to hear it on a French C tuba because it was so markedly better on the little F than it was on the big CC. The Rudy couldn't get as bright as some sections needed. The 182 fixed that to a great extent while still allowing a darker sound when necessary.
