Occasionally, especially for numbers that have similar chord changes.

Sure, I'm probably worse, when it's just me, with no sheet music, and I need to play some tune. That would be on the accordion, but same problem. The only guaranteed remedy is if I know words to the tune. Then if the title evokes the words, I think there would be no problem ... if only I knew words to any of those tunes.

A good leader always sings the first few notes quietly and mentions the key before tapping off the tune.
Just to be safe I always watch his fingers to make sure he was right about the key.
A so-so bass man sometimes asks the piano player what the first chord is, or maybe the first chord of the bridge.
More info than that is rarely needed.

Yes, seems like my brain can not remember the link between a tune's name/ composer, and the music itself...

Same with me. Marches, too: I find myself looking up both entrance and beginning of "trio" every time.
Once the tune has started, I can usually tuck the folder away.

And I seem to instantly forget names and composers of pieces we keep in our concert band folder.
They´re gone as soon as the concert is finished, at the latest.

My ability to recall names of anything People, Tunes, etc. is terrible. I often find myself singing tunes to other musicians when discussing them because I can't remember the name of it. The other day I was talking to an old friend who I stood up for at his wedding, and couldn't recall his wife's first name.

I feel exactly the same way, Joe. Is it a tuba thing, maybe because when we play these tunes, we're rarely playing the melody? It's probably easier to associate melody with tunes, than chord changes?

Or, it could be old age.

I'll usually know whatever tune is called, but not know what the 'traditional' key is, so have to ask.

Speaking of the Miller arrangement of "Little Brown Jug": my BIGGEST PET PEEVE in swing music are those players who jump the 3rd beat of the second measure instead of keeping it on the beat so that the eighth note on the upbeat of 4 in the second measure provides the swing. To play it otherwise is not only a corruption of the part, but dilutes the effectiveness of that upbeat of 4 eighth note which provides a signature for Miller's style of big band swing.
