Schoenberg Theme and Variations Baritone horn part

Post by DavidBalcerzak »

I am getting ready to play this piece and I noticed that there are separate baritone horn and euphonium parts. Is the baritone horn part meant to be played on baritone horn or euphonium. I own both instruments so I am wondering what instrument to play?

I had this same dilemma last year when I played the baritone part. I don't think that I have ever heard of anyone using a legit baritone horn on this piece.

I know that the military bands always use euphonium for both parts, but that's not to say that a baritone horn would be inappropriate. If you trust your director about these things, maybe play it on both horns for them and see what they prefer. It also wouldn't hurt to consult your low brass section.

It is a very fun part to play in a great piece!

I played it on baritone, but I remember subsequently reading or hearing that it was intended for euphonium.
