Tuba slides falling out during transport

Post by IsaacTuba »

I have an Eastman 632 and it’s hard case, and whenever I roll it around on those tiny wheels the tuba has a chance of all of its slides falling out and denting the bell unless I practically carry the case everywhere.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? Or get a case with bigger wheels? I can barely go across sidewalks without a slide falling out. Maybe considering that Miraphone gig bag I heard about.

Put thicker lubricant on the slides. Unless you are trying to show off your trombone slide technique while you play tuba, you shouldn't have to pull that fast. I personally like Space Filler Green for my pull slides and regular old lanolin slide grease for the other slides.

There are several brands that have thicker slide grease. Ultra pure and Hetman's are two that come to mind. If that doesn't work, you can go to your tech and he/she can slightly expand the slide to make it fit tighter.

Tie some string on it to stop it short of popping out

Even fancy tubas do this. Perhaps more as a "stop" so you consistently pull the same amount, but "stop pulling here" and "STOP, don't fall out!" are really the same thing.
