Gessner F Tuba

Post by hubert »

Recently I had the chance to buy a rare Gessner F tuba, produced by Friedrich Gessner of Breslau (today Wroclaw in Poland). The instrument must date from the first third of the 20th century. Friedrich Gessner worked in Breslau till 1934.
Height of the instrument is 98 cm, bell 35 cm, weight a little more than 6 kg. The brass is very thin, but (still) of very good quality.
Bore is 20 mm!! Sound is marvellous: big for a German F and with an unexpected good low register. Intonation is fine, very manageable.
The seller had the instrument overhauled by J. Voigt in Markneukirchen and added a 5th valve by Meister A. Eckensberger at Chemnitz.
I love to play it, and the members of my quintet are fond of it :) :)
Hope the link works, so you can enjoy a look at it.
