Visiting Midwest Clinic-input needed.

Hey folks, I’m going to drive up to the Midwest clinic on Thursday to check it out and sit at the Eastman Music booth. They’d suggested I give a presentation of some sort and I thought I’d solicit feedback and suggestions for a topic here. Anyone that’s going, please chime in here or via PM on a topic that you’d find helpful. I’m planning on doing it sometime Thursday afternoon. Time length would be around 30-45 minutes.

If the audience is not a bunch of tuba players, I would speak about basic problems people have making an acceptable sound. A lot of band directors are probably suffering from uninformed players making a lot of indistinct racket in the back row. They would come by to learn how to change that .

You'll get a lot of tuba players there, but hopefully a lot more band directors than tuba players. With that in mind, it might be the best use of the moment to talk about:

*Shortcuts to clarity of articulation in a tuba section you would give from the podium.

*Shortcuts to intonation in a tuba section you would give from the podium.

*Blending with a tuba section in a band in contrast to blending as the only tuba in an orchestra.

What to look for in a good tuba candidate once it comes time to pick the instruments or switch to tuba. Its not always the kid who hit 6' in middle school (and they tend to move on to sports at a higher rate anyway). Any background in piano is helpful- as they can already read bass clef, independant personalities, and good ears are all desireable in a solid tuba section at that age.
