Sibelius 2nd Symphony Tuba Part

Postby Art Hovey » Tue Dec 18, 2018 12:43 am

The first time I played this part it was with two rehearsals, using a poor-quality photocopy that was barely legible.
Even with the original printed parts it is difficult to know when to come in, and there are some misprints.
So I spent a lot of time on making a clearer version:

The conductor I did this for most recently asked me to play the pickup notes that are in the bass and bassoon parts, so I included them as cues in my version of the charts. "I Play The Tuba..." etc. makes sense to me.

I did this too, both times I have played it, after a lot of score study. He is inconsistent with how he does that, and I think it may have been one of those fixes put in due to a weak local player. I think he probably *originally* wanted it that way. So I match every other instrument with that line, as ONLY the tuba is missing notes, and he fails to used the same pattern the second time, so it was NOT a blend, balance, or "tonal palette" thing. I strongly suspect it was a tuba clam thing and it was not unedited when it went to press.

I see it as being one of those unfortunate things like the intro (and several other spots) of Scheherazade. You did no harm and probably made it better by not allowing those missing pickups stick out of the line as different, and inconsistently so from one occurrence to the next.
