The Rudy is not easy to play on first encounter but if you spend some time to learn what she likes you will be extremely satisfied. Yes, Bloke is right, the intonation is excellent on the 5/4 Rudy and the sound of this Red Brass version is really amazing....The sound of the Rudy is more colorful, muscular and direct than the PT7...I guess you could say that this is the classic German vs American sound debate that we have been discussing over the years...

I had a Rudy 5/4 CC for three years - best playing tuba I’ve ever owned. Too bad I couldn’t hold it: tuba stands, drum thrones, chairs, piano benches, posture compromises. Was just too wide in the bow to relax with.....

That's funny, I was just going to say that both tubas, for how large they are, are actually quite comfortable to me.

And Russ, thanks for the comparisons. Next to that Rudy, anything else will sound "less Germanic." I don't think the PT7 sounds as American as a York or Holton 345, but what the hell do I know.

This Red Brass RM50 was your tuba I believe!! It has had an interesting history....

OMG, is that my old RM 5/4 ? It must have come via MT, fine player. I miss it: incredible dynamic range and colour. Glad to see it in service. I’m “making do” with a Mirafone 188

Yes, via M.T. in Toronto...love this tuba! Huge, but very easy to play, great intonation and sound....and, I can hold it!

Bloke what is the silver hybrid raincatcher you posted? It appears to be in a museum.

In May 1971 and after bringing Arnold Jacobs and Rudolf Meinl together in Vienna, Rudy and one of his craftsman worked out the first 5/4 CC at his shop in Diespeck. Rudy was just thirty-two at the time, already a master tuba maker. The first instrument was finished in record time; I took this to London, to show to John Fletcher. Compliments to Rudy: the intonation of the instrument was excellent. Rudolf Meinl and I remain good friends to this day.
