Up a 4th I hear, with Orchestra.
What do we think of this?
I say good on him.
Can't think of much tuba rep being borrowed!

True. Didn't RVW approve the Romance's performance on Cello or Bassoon? He must have liked it, or wanted more sales at least...CC wrote:They've borrowed from that one for awhile now actually...

VW wrote that Cello, Euphonium and Bassoon could perform the Romanza but only the Euphonium could perform it as written without scoring getting in the way.

And here is his letter apparently giving permission for Denis Wright to arrange the entire Tuba Concerto up a fourth for Euphonium performance with Military or Brass Band accompaniment

He rightly says Euph AND Bassoon can play it Un-fettled...Jacob.Guilbeau wrote:VW wrote that Cello, Euphonium and Bassoon could perform the Romanza but only the Euphonium could perform it as written without scoring getting in the way.

Re: David Childs records VW on Euph
Since it's David Childs, I'm always excited to hear him play. Still the best solo performance I have ever seen live.
That said, I would personally be more interested in hearing a euph play the whole thing with orchestra at pitch. No octave displacement and no transposition. It's totally doable, and with recording magic I think it could sound very nice. Might not be enough push in the lower pedal stuff to come across live with an orchestra, but on a CD it would work marvelous IMO.

I expect DC considered performing the VW at tuba pitch. I'll try to find out. Players like Childs would do a fine job live or studio I expect.JasonEuphonium wrote:Since it's David Childs, I'm always excited to hear him play. Still the best solo performance I have ever seen live.

The John Williams was recorded by Charlie Vernon. Would make a good candidate for a Euph run...

Re: David Childs records VW on Euph
Having played it on Eb-tuba years ago I got curious now and tried it on the French C. Never thought about that before, but it is very comfortable to play, the range is just the same as most french pieces for the li'l one. So I think there will be no need for recording tricks for this.
