Doesn't the Britten Young Person's Guide have a low D on the downbeat? Seems like I played it a couple of times a year for a while, but I haven't had it for about 15 years, so please excuse my memory if I'm off on that.

Britten's 'Sinfonia da Requiem' sort of qualifies as a symphony. Ish. And starts with a fff 5th leger line low D.
