Yamaha 842 Euphonium with Brass Rot

Post by AnneWertz »

Hi All!

I currently play a Yamaha 842 euphonium that I bought used in 2012. A few weeks ago, I noticed that the horn sounded like it had a leak and discovered an open pinhole coming out of the tubing leaving the third valve. I took it in to get checked out by a repairman and he scoped the horn and reported that there is brass rot on ALL of the bends coming out of the valve section. These areas are also covered with tiny dark spots that the repairman said would eventually open up into more pinholes. He suggested to temporarily patch the hole with a rubber patch made from clarinet mouthpiece saver. This has been working for now but I'm not really sure what to do next.

Would it be worth it to get all of the damaged areas replaced? I was wondering if replacing so much of the horn would mess with the sound and the way it currently plays. Has anyone ever experienced a similar situation?

Thanks for your help!

I had a very similar problem with my Yamaha bb flat neo tuba a few years back. When my tech was doing a valve alignment he noticed 3 small pinholes on the front knuckle coming out of the front of the second valve. Red rot.As the tuba was still under warranty I had to send the horn to a well known repair shop in eastern Canada. As this particular tuba is hand made Yamaha had to make the affected part in japan and send it to my tech in Toronto.Yamaha was really good about everything but the whole process took almost 6 months.Everything seems to great now.
