Hello people...
Anyone can make a comparison between the Melton Thor - old (450mm) and the Hirsbrunner 390?
thank you

Hb 390 owners love them dearly, but here’s a frank and very brief comparison:

The 5450 it’s considerably larger, offers a much easier low range, and offers considerably fewer intonation issues. One of each – just for what it’s worth – are within 20 feet of me at this moment.
Contacting privately, I could repeat what I said here, but there really isn’t much at all to add.

You can do this yourself.

Find a webpic of each (in particular, the ORIGINAL version of the 5450), and edit the picture sizes until the bell diameters (which are both around 450mm) are the same.

I would also add that it seems like HB and Thor owners both seem to love them dearly. It's been a while for me, but I agree with Joe's descriptions. However the HB was much more physically comfortable for me to hold. The Thor just seemed really tall!

You had best watch it...
You could start getting warnings in your PM Inbox.

I considered posting "2,124,500" but I guess good ol' tubenet humor is not as acceptable as it used to be.
All that, plus $8.00, will get you a venti at Starbucks.
Or in my case, a large can of Folgers.

IMHO, 5450 is about 14 times more desirable than 390. :D

I have one of these older Thors and recently tried one of 390’s. This particular horn felt quite temperamentic and I would definetely needed some time to get used to it. I was actually quite impressed how the owner (one of top pro’s here in Scandinavia) was able make it sound in concerts considering how it feels. Sound was sweet though. Thor in other hand is easy very easy to approach, I don’t have the luxury to be able to practise with it a lot (I’ll do my big tuba practise almost solely on Bb that’s btw Hirsbrunner) but I feel I can just plug mp in and play it immediatelly. Intonation is very easy and all the registers are very eaven, low register’s being fantastic. It has bigger body than Hirsbrunner and hence noticebly more sound but at the same time it’s heavier physically and can be ergonomically problematic.

In summary:
Thor:
- bigger body and bigger sound
- very consistent registers and intonation
- fantastic low registers
- maybe not as interesting soundvise compared to Hirsbrunner
- possibly problematic ergonomically

Hirsbrunner 390
- not as open as Thor
- smaller body and smaller sound, also more clear and interesting in my opinion
- intonation and response are not that consistent, but it could be only in the horn I tried
- they vary more from horn to horn
- more mojo (only IMO)
