Sexism in 1889: women playing the tuba on tricycles?!

Postby Dave Detwiler » Sat Mar 09, 2019 9:52 am

While hunting for other things entirely, I stumbled upon this reference to ladies' bands and bicycle bands in the January 1889 edition of The British Bandsman.

1889-01-15 British Bandsman p. 70 (Ladies bands).JPG
Played an F. E. Olds 4-valve BBb in high school (late '70s)
Led the USC Trojan Marching Band tuba section (early '80s)
Now playing an F. Schmidt (=VMI) 3301 and goofing around
on a 1927 Pan American 64K Sousaphone Grand
