TubeNet

Can anybody tell me what model this is. All I know is that it's a King Recording tuba, and the serial number tell me that it was built between 1955 and 1960. If you click on the pic it'll snap to the correct orientation. Don't know why it showed up this way. First time posting a pic.

When I was hired at the school that owned it many moons ago, all of the valves were missing, is was smashed to h*ll, and it was the only concert type tuba that was there. I was told to throw it out which I did...... originally, then I had second thoughts. I took it from the pile and had it rebuilt for myself..... around 1981-82. Being single in those days, money was no problem!!!!!

Just went to eBay with that number. Looks more like a 1240. They have a picture of on for sale, and it looks pretty much like mine. The numbers they re using are 1240/2340. Not sure what the 2340 is.

No. The 1140 is a 3/4 tuba. This tuba is a 1240.

Yeah, the 1140 pic they also had on eBay looked like a 3/4 size. Thanks guys.

By the way...... opinion time..........would it be worthwhile to have a fourth valve added to it? It's a pretty sturdy horn, and I'd probably use it a lot more if it had the fourth valve.

There are so many 1241/2341 4-valve tubas out there for sale, it is not cost-effective to add a 4th valve to a 3-valve 1240/2340.

Please do not subject yourself or the horn to the addition of a fourth valve. I have owned a 1241 King "Symphony" Recording Bass for 43 years. It was made in 1930. I have used it regularly since it was purchased in 1976 and it is my main horn in a very good local community band. This horn will reach to the very bottom A with little effort and if played competently as elephant said above, will manage very well in a concert band situation and especially at any outdoor gigs. I also have thought about adding a fourth valve over the years, however so far have resisted it. If it is that you want one, then follow the above suggestion of buying the four valve model of this horn.

I'm not totally convinced I should actually do it either. I'm more curious than determined!! I like the way it plays, but, it's just so much more convenient to have that 4th valve to go lower. I find myself lowering my little finger and there's nothing to push........ by that time I've already screwed up the tune!! Brain hiccup!!!
