I was at the Sunday matinee - he was masterful, and as you can imagine, he played with a great deal of emotion.

Someone I know who had multiple myeloma and who had a medical background, found the only treatment that could work was a bone marrow transplant. She did not do chemo; she did the bone marrow transplant and years later is healthy. It was not easy. Best to your friend.

The "Song for Hope" in support of Ryan and his foundation was originally written as the middle movement of a Cornet Concerto for my band, for the principal cornet, Mark Wilkinson.

Obviously since then it's taken many versions and performances, and last year we recorded it with 3 great trumpet players in tribute to RYan, on Mike Lovatt's sols CD. The trumpets were Mike Lovatt (John Wilson Orchestra, BBC Big Band etc.), Gareth Small (Halle, London Brass) and Phil Cobb (LSO, International Staff Band). There's a video of it here:

This has been the saddest of days for both me and my colleagues in the Dallas Symphony.

Ryan taught us a lot about how to be a great human being. Above all, he showed us how to continue on no matter what. Ryan would receive a chemo treatment, vomit, go play a concert and sound fabulous. He never complained once.

My last DSO concert with Ryan was in March of 2018. We played Mahler 1 with Jaap van Zweden. Ryan was not too sure he was going to make it through that week but he pressed on. Our Sunday afternoon concert was probably the best Mahler 1 performance I can ever remember and Ryan executed his part heroically. It's memories like this that make performing in an orchestra so special.

He fought cancer every day to see his family one more time. I have never met a more courageous man and have only the fondest of memories.

I did not know Mr. Anthony except through his performances with the Canadian Brass and the postings here, mostly from Bloke, about his great talent and harrowing journey. I extend to his family and all those who knew and loved him my deepest condolences. The world is certainly poorer for having lost this soul.

I didn't know Ryan other than through his playing in the DSO and Canadian Brass. I'm not sure there was any other active Principal Trumpet with such a brilliant and captivating sound as Ryan had. In an era when most trumpet players are playing it safe and not taking many risks there was always Ryan taking risks and usually hitting it big. RIP
