Dear TubeNet,

Do any of you fine gentlemen happen to possess any information on the history of this Rite of Spring performance? Here is what I know: the conductor is Esa-Pekka Salonen, the ensemble is the LA Philharmonic, and the performance venue is the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Other than that, I've been unable to find any information on the year of the performance, what medium this was originally published in, and if an accompanying audio recording was created. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I'm pretty sure that the YouTube video you linked to is from the 2003 opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The concert was shown in some markets on the local PBS television station.

EDIT: The available recording on DG is not from this performance. See Norm Pearson’s comments below.

I think the tuba players are Norm Pearson and Fritz Kenzig but have no idea what they're playing on.Ed

Correct :!: I remember when that live performance was shown on TV. The guy on bass trumpet - Jim Miller - was (at that time) the trombone teacher at my school. I was in college at the time, and interestingly enough we (college orchestra + plus a few local pros/ringers) performed Rite of Spring the following year. Probably the overall hardest piece I've played in orchestra

There is a Deutsche Grammophon recording available of that performance. It has Night on Bare Mountain and Miraculous Mandarin Suite on it as well. You can find it at any of the usual retailers or download on itunes, etc.
That was indeed one of the concerts from the opening week at Walt Disney Concert Hall in October of 2003. I played the first part on my Yamaha YFB822 with a Schilkie 69C4 mp and Fritz Kaenzig played 2nd tuba on his Yorkbrunner. This video is the only recording released of this performance.

In January of 2006 we performed and recorded the Rite of Spring along with the original Mussorgsky orchestration of Night on Bare Mountain and the Miraculous Mandarin suite. That is the performance on the Deutsche Gramophone recording. Fritz was on that recording as well. Same equipment only I used my Yamayork on the Mussorgsky.

Hope this helps.
