Just finished watching a live concert by the LSO under the direction of sir simon rattle play two pieces, one by john adams and the famous symphonie fantastique by berlioz. Both of these pieces involved two tubas and both were played remarkably well on two compensating ee flats by the new principal tuba of the LSO ben Thompson and Patrick harrlid, former principal tuba of the LSO.The compensating ee flat tuba, in the hands of someone far better than myself, can be a poweful tool, not only in the brass band world but also in an orchestral environment.Just my two cents and observations.

When the instrument itself is good, both versions are good.
A collar at the bottom bow, two or three detachable braces, and a (high-end Chinese) $500 or (German) $1000 option would be nifty.
Besson makes a four valve compensating ee flat[980?] I believe that has a 17 inch bell that are popular in England. The tuba soloist from England, Les Neish plays one.It has a very different sound than my besson 981 which has a 19 inch bell.

Sadly the British brass band I play in here in Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada recently had our imperial e flat with a 15 inch bell stolen. It only had three valves but complimented my 981 sovereign with its 19 inch bell very nicely.

I'm currently enjoying my somewhat new to me 15" Imperial in brass band alongside a decent player on a Yamaha 19" comp. It's a nice fit for sure and a pleasure to play on.
