You are right--cleaning is a MUCH discussed topic! For that, just search tubenet. Synopsis? Go to a professional repairman who has the capacity to dunk tubas and get it chem-cleaned and adjusted properly. Expect this to cost $90-$175., but it's worth it once a year or so.

If you are in the Memphis area, be sure to give Joe (Bloke) a call at Mid-South Music.

Doc, I wanted to get you to clarify your vinegar routine for us. The original question asked whether the valves should be disassembled. Do you, in fact, do that when you run your twice yearly flush-out? I, too have a 186 and should probably give it some more attention.
Thanks for your insight.

Thank you, Doc. In the end, the valves ARE taken apart (a rather daunting task). I will definitely not do the cleaning, myself. My local tech will get the job.
