Leaving out the doiuble-stops, etc. and tinkering around with the cadenzas, you might make it playable, and actually pull a performance off.

Personally, I think this is one that is probably best left on a 'cello, but who knows?

The first time I ever heard this work performed live, it was played by Rostropovich and the experience was spellbinding.
