Places to check out tubas in Chicago?

Post by IsaacTuba »

I’ll be in Chicago for the next few days and I’m wondering if there’s any cool shops I should check out to play some nice horns. I’m here to see the CSO play at Ravinia among other things.

The Wessex showroom is a little west of O'Hare, if that's of interest to you.

I second a visit to the Wessex Showroom. You have to call and make an appointment.
If used sousaphones is of interest I have 2-3 guys that would have 8-10 on hand to try.

Virtually all Wessex models of brass instruments are on display at the Showroom. Hours are by appointment so that
- you can test-play the tubas and other instruments in privacy
- you can avoid the “elephant room syndrome” found at conferences and festivals
- you can be assured that the model(s) you wish to test-play are on display at the time of your visit

While the Showroom is within 22 minutes of the terminals at O’Hare International Airport (ORD), you do not need to ride through the traffic of the city of Chicago itself. We are very close to several major highways.

If you ARE coming from or traveling to downtown Chicago, the Roselle Train Station on METRA’s Milwaukee-West Line is within steps of our Showroom and connects with The Loop at Union Station.

We have arranged a special corporate room rate for Wessex Tubas guests at the full-featured Holiday Inn Chicago-West (Itasca) with free fresh-cooked breakfast menu. The hotel’s free shuttle can take you to and from our Showroom, which is 5 minutes from the hotel. In addition to the hotel’s restaurant, there are fine restaurants within walking distance of the Showroom and the hotel.

If you bring a Bluetooth device (your phone will be fine), you can have accompaniments or orchestral excerpts that you’ve downloaded play through our fine Bluetooth-equipped hybrid piano. You can also record yourself and then listen in the Showroom away from under the bell.

The address of the Wessex Tubas Showroom is:

344 E. Irving Park Rd. (IL Rte. 19)

Your airfare to the showroom will be deducted from your purchase price, up to 10% of your newly-placed Wessex regularly priced instrument order.

Orchestra Hall on Michigan Ave has a pretty nice vintage York CC. Some people have said some nice things about it.
