B&S GR41 arrived today...
...and it's a very nice tuba in every way. Feels like I've been playing it for years, very familiar and easy to navigate.
More to come after I get used to it. But the first few hours have been pretty great.

Congratulations! I really like the Gr-41. The two examples I've played have been very good tubas!

Re: B&S GR41 arrived today...
Maybe Joe is onto something, I should keep the GR41 at least until I'm 41 (I will be 39 in October). All fair questions though, I've changed horns a lot.
The PT6 that I had was an excellent tuba. I'm thrilled that the new owner likes it so much. Selling a tuba doesn't mean it's a bad tuba, just that it ended up being the wrong thing for me. And selling it sooner than later is just a matter of being practical and getting on with things.
Anyway...
Photos will come tomorrow.
Again, what struck me about this tuba right away was how easy and natural it felt. I think this might be my ideal tuba size, to get behind it and push (with room to push), instead of having something large and holding back. A lot of people do that just fine, but it wasn't how I learned to play, and just not as easy for me. I like easy.
More tomorrow, I'm rambling now.

Re: B&S GR41 arrived today...
In the last year, I went from a PT6 rotor to a 4/4 piston too. The PT6 was a really wonderful instrument, but it is a tool that should be used by a pro or aspiring pro. Or at least someone who plays seriously regularly. For someone who regularly had to take a month or months off and come back cold and out of shape, it was a less-than-satisfying instrument. Mine made me pay when I was out of shape. I will maintain, though, that you cannot find a better orchestral tuba.
The 4/4 is much more forgiving of my absences. It is really a great instrument in its own right, though very different than the PT6.

So, um...which horn is this really, for those of us who haven't yet bothered to assimilate the weird, new number identification system?

^ This! Thank you for articulating this far more clearly than I was able to do. I think this is exactly what I experienced.timayer wrote:In the last year, I went from a PT6 rotor to a 4/4 piston too. The bell says both GR41 and PT-606. But it lists GR41 first, so that's what I call it.

A bit of lacquer wear on the bottom bow and a few little dings on the big parts. VERY good condition*, plays great!
*Joe -- the bell is not smashed, nor has it ever been smashed.

That one was a beauty! Mine is slightly less new, but still in great shape. All "who cares" kinds of minor blemishes.Three Valves wrote:Somebody just sold one at Baltimore Brass.
Easy to play, plenty of power, and sounds great.
