Spent the wee hours of yesterday morning listening to 18 of of the finest brass bands in the British Isles battle it out in the British Open. While the live feed was sketchy to say the least,i had the opportunity to hear some great performances, especially from some phenomenal bass sections. TubeNet's own Andy Cattanach played his bb flat Yamaha neo tuba in the Fodens band who finished a very respectable 3rd place. While listening with a good set of headphones is no substitute for being their live the sound that 2 ee flat and 2 bb flat tubas can produce is a truly remarkable sound.Just my 2 cents.

Good stuff. I wish I could have seen that. I'm sure it was incredible. Who were first and second?

Just curious - is playing in one of those top level UK bands a full time job? I heard Brett Baker from Black Dyke at ITF in July and he was an amazing trombone player. He played 5 consecutive solos with the Central Ohio BB and just killed all of them.

While I am not from England, but from someone who has numerous conversations with some of the elite of the british band world who have played with our brass band in Saskatoon,i am told that players are not paid, nor are they considered to be professional. The majority are music teachers at all levels, while the rest are just regular folk like myself. The players from England,be it cornet, alto horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba have chops of steel for the simple reason that the horn never comes off your face when you are playing in a british brass band.

Personally, I manage the IT at a school/college and play for a hobby. The top bands sometimes get some petrol money, but that's it. We generally pay our own hotels and food when away, and I travel around 500 miles a week for band on average through the year, and get around 75% of that cost back. And we're one of the few left that pay anything at all!

Interesting - I was thinking that the top bands were professional organizations like the top orchestras.
