My dad and i were wondering...

We were polishing my tuba (silver finish) and we were wondering if a certain kind of car wax might work. so, we tried it on a little area of the instrument and it worked wonders! So shiny! Just wondering if this is good, or if it is incredibly bad for the instrument.

Thanks!

We used KIT Carnauba Car Wax.

Be very careful, most car waxes contain abrasive cleaners/polishing compounds. If the label says cleaner or polish, don't even try it. On the other hand, a straight carnuba wax shouldn't hurt anything.

Pledge comes in an easy, spray-on bottle. If you must use wax.

I have tried car wax (don't remember what kind) on my silver-plated tuba and it was great, it really protected the finish from tarnish for a longer period of time. I think furniture polish would work as well, but it smells so nasty...[/i]

I currently use Haggerty's Silver Polish, works very well.

what do you need to do to polish correctly? Do you apply the polish, let it sit for a couple minutes and then dry it? how is it done properly? i'm asking this because i always end up get smears or something that are impossible to get off without a lot of effort. i don't know if i'm using too much or what...

If it's a good hard wax you want, try this stuff:

Pure microcrystalline wax, used by museums to preserve everything from bronzes to photographs. Personally, I'd never use it on silver; I'd just keep the silver clean with a little Windex from time to time.
