I'm outing myself as a tuba player here, and not only a tuba player, but one who truly enjoys polka gigs, but there's a real art to doing these bass lines justice. And it's being done here as well as I've ever heard it. Picking the right moments to embellish. Clean articulations. Slightly more emphasis in all the right places. I.e., keeping it supportive but interesting. And sets a great foundation for the rest of the band. On Sunday, I played with a more traditional style German brass band. Depending on the event, we will play some Sousa and other American marches, and we always play Them Basses. I figured it was a good opportunity to see how much this instrument could take, so I put down the hammer. She held together pretty well without it sounding completely tasteless (they could barely hear the tubas in the tent, so no harm done with this experiment):
