Does anyone have any insight/advice/tips for performing this piece? I have never heard it played. How is it to listen to?

Here's a link to the Amazon.co.uk listing for the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Greatest Hits album. It's got sound bites of all the tracks including the Malcolm Arnold Quintet (tracks 22, 23 & 24).

I did start to rehearse this piece whilst I was a military bandsman but we never had the time to really crack it. Fabulous tuba part with some outrageous runs in the third movement.

This is THE piece that got me excited about quintets & this recording is the one I first heard.

I'm pretty sure that Amazon.com carries this CD & I would urge everyone to get a copy, it even has two Fletcher quartets!

I have this CD as well, and it's great... I thought it was the Center City quintet though. I could be wrong, mine's burned. It's got the Calvert Suite from Monteregian Hills as well. That's a fun piece that's also quite challenging.

Great piece to play both musically and technically....

It will teach your ensemble how better to communicate, especially during the last movement.

It's one of the best quintets, both for the player and for the listener. I first heard it done by the NY Brass Quintet with Harvey Phillips, and it made a lasting impression on me. I have played it many times since then but still hear Harvey in my head.
There is a run in the last movement that even I must admit works better on CC tuba than on BBb.
