Re: York Flea Market Find
Nice!!! How does it play? I would assume USQMC means it was originally ordered for a U.S. Military band. I wonder what kind of history it has had. Thankfully not a very rough one!

Re: York Flea Market Find
Curious- what MP it came with or what you've tried.Anyone have any mp recommendations for this type of eb with a small shank?
My old Martin Eb likes a Schilke 60 bass Tbone MP. Deep cup and big throat. It inserts a little "too far", but to my thinking it helps with the barely in tune low pitch.
In my readings of this board I see opinions ranging from "Old tubas work best with old Mouthpieces" to "ditch the bass trombone for a "real" tuba MP". With no furthers details offered, I think I've found what works for me.
Also curious - it appears from your photo, that horn has 2 water keys on the main: one on the tuning slide and one before. Perhaps I'm seeing it wrong or didn't trace the path properly.

I am seeing two; the second one is on the high-to-low pitch conversion loop tucked in behind the third valve circuit.SteveP wrote:I think what you're seeing as two water keys is actually just one, it being partially obscured by the third valve loop? Is this right?
I'd love one of these to go with my Holton Monster E-flat.

You are very, very lucky to have the original mouthpiece. Not only is the shank a different size, it has a different taper than what is now "standard." If the receiver is not worn, you have a great match.lost wrote:The shank size if definitely smaller than a standard tuba mp but larger than a bass trombone mp.
