My brass quintet has tried using cell phone metronome apps - but has found that the speakers on the cell phones are too puny to really produce audible clicks when we are all playing. Does anyone have suggestions for good portable metronomes that can produce enough sound to work well for a brass group. Thanks for any advice.

Have you considered pairing your phone with a bluetooth speaker?

When needed, I hook my metronome to a Roland Cube amplifier.

We have tried a bluetooth speaker - but our trombone player likes referring to the visual cues as well, and there was a pretty substantial lag between the beat indicated on the screen and the audible click coming from the speaker.

We would prefer, if possible, not to carry too much extra equipment, and since we all play acoustically, adding an amplifier just to support a metronome makes for an awfully heavy metronome.

The Matrix MR-600 may have the loudest click of any battery operated unit. If I want a louder click I use the TE Tuner app on my iPad. It gives you a large choice of different sounds. Please let us know if you find a better solution.

I use a Korg KDM2, it has a really loud sound and lots of tempo features, but looks quite expensive on American ebay

I can't tell you which one I have without digging into a box, but I can tell you that a click is going to be difficult to hear. I got one that emits a high pitch instead of a click, and we could easily hear it in brass quintet.

An alternate answer -- work on your difficult passages with the metronome and air-and-valves, including articulations, but no buzzing or actually "playing". A lot of tempo issues have nothing to do with the sound you're making and everything to do with your preparation to make the next sound. By taking away the noise of playing the horns, you'll hear the metronome just fine.

Another alternate -- since your trombone player likes the visual cues from the phone, mute the metronome and have him give the tempo. The first brass quintet I played in was led by the trombone player, both artistically and in performance, and it seemed to work fine.

I like that when you can play something between 184 and 200 beats per minute, the metronome offers you a round of applause.
