Help, how would you remove Gold Plating?

Post by Dave Hayami »

Besides the obvious, having a repair shop buff off the plating, have any of you had any other experience in removing the "gold wash" from the inside of a bell?(Yet leave the silver )
Thank you,

Buffing is the safest way. Gold is not very reactive, so anything that would dissolve it chemically would also harm the silver underneath.

You shouldn't need a repair shop to do the work, though. A moderately abrasive metal polish and a little elbow grease should do the job very quickly.

Keep in mind, though, the abrasive is to go through the gold, but not the silver (which was also plated over the brass), so not too much elbow grease...
