And yet they only use three of the valves. What are the other ones even for?

I believe that's called a Sixaphone.

Nope. Not a 6 valve sousaphone.
6 valve, detachable bell helicon!

Here he is in a different setting.

I wonder if it's meant to use the other hand to play them? Or maybe he thought it up for some very specific uses. Pretty cool looking though. I wonder if he grafted two three valve blocks together.

Think how much weight the player would save if he simply used a standard 3-valve sousaphone, converted the top loop of the 1st valve circuit to a movable slide, and used a make and model that had good, smooth "privileged" tones.

That's why I play all of my NOLA brass band stuff on a Martin mammoth sousa. It fulfills both those requirements quite well, and the best part is that they all already have top first slides from the factory, no mods needed.

How many other sousas offer a top first slide as standard? I think Besson comes to mind. Any others?

At first, I thought the 6-valve monstrosity was built in Pripyat. How else to have 6 fingers (plus a thumb?)

The Wessex helicon has a top pull first valve.
And they now offer a 3-valve version if you want to save on weight.

The early 1930s HN White 1250's we have do. The King 2350's we have from the early 1980's don't.
You are so right!
