As someone who owns a cimbasso and only uses it maybe three times a year, I would think to do this as well. But, I'd reference the 1st movement of the 4th symphony. Would you play that on cimbasso? Very similar writing and rhythms. You may hear it differently.

Cimba$$o could sound *20%-50% better than tuba.

Honestly, an F tuba for the whole piece might be a good choice. I seem to recall seeing some other works of Tchaikovsky played on F and though it made for a pretty good sound.

Just use your Mirafone 186 on it. That way, you get that 70% tuba, 30% cimbasso mixed sound already, lol

If you don't like the way it sounds with tuba just tell the bass trombone player to play the line all the way down to the E flat. He or she will probably enjoy playing it and your problem is solved without having to haul out the cimbasso.

We’ve done this twice in Pensacola. Great,descriptive writing. Beautiful love theme during the rests. Also very meaty tuba part. I’m quite happy using a big c. Tricky rhythms in a couple places. Always glad to see this work programmed.

Don't quote me, but I think I've read here/heard that Deck was on a Yorkbrunner around this time in the NY Phil. Sounds like it in this recording, along with Tchaik 4 and the Wagner Ring cycle recordings around this time. Fantastic sound

There are 'sound transitions' in music all the time, and Tchaikovsky specified tuba for those certain parts, so.....
