Players known for their amazing tone

Hi Tubenet! I was wondering if y'all could give me a list of the best players around the world with what you perceive as a beautiful tone. I'm trying to shape my tone into something more desirable than what I have now. Currently my tone is fuzzy and I feel that if I had players to try and base my sound off of I can improve a lot. I want to learn what a beautiful and "correct" tone sounds like. Thanks!

I love Gene Pokorny's sound on Tuba Tracks in particular. Jon Sass's sound is also superbly rich, in my opinion.

Just remember that recordings are not made where your ears are listening.....they are from a distance. So you need to make a guess as to where the mike was when the recording was done, and record yourself from that same place.

And to the TNFJ, why has no one mentioned a World Class Sound yet?

The tone in recordings will never be as good as the tone in person.

I find it hard to believe that it took 15 responses for anyone to mention Arnold Jacobs. Jake's sound has always set the standard as far as I am concerned.

Rex Martin's Live from Japan recording provides a good example.

Will Druiett’s recordings on the Wessex Youtube account of him testing the Linz, Chicago, and Prokofiev. Gorgeous F tuba sound and beastly contrabass sound.

So many great players listed so far! I would add Norm Pearson (LA Philharmonic), Perry Hoogendijk (Concertgebouw Orchestra), Chris Olka (Cincinnati Symphony), James Hicks (US Navy Band), John Dicesare (Seattle Symphony)
