It is my understanding that the same fabricator supplies Dillon and Wessex (for this cimbasso, not necessarily for other instruments).

I’m pretty sure it is a bass trombone. But if the part ever came up in one of bloke’s orchestra gigs, I think he’d whip out the cimbasso!!

Thanks! I'll confess I'm not hearing much to complain about in the 1964 Big Band Bossa Nova recording. I must not be discerning enough to complain about the flute, and the trombones are such a joy anyway.
Edit: Ok, about a minute in the highest flutes are shrill. Somehow, it sounds worse in the 2001 Talkin' Verve mix. And now I think I'm worrying about it too much....
