Hello

Anyone come up with something that sits in between a 28H and a 30H?

Love the bottom end on a 30h and love the core and stability of the 28H.

28H has an ok low range for me and the 30H has decent sound, but I want something in the middle.

Ideas?

This is going on a Nirschl York.

You need a 8.1mm drill!

If you want to stick with Laskey mouthpieces, try the 30B. If you can find one.

I have been loving my euro shank Dillon Olka CB2 (both euro a & american shanks work differently btw) on my Nirschl York for a few years. It's got a comfy rim (a little big diameter-wise for some people) but still clean articulation, super smooth slurring, fantastic tone that can go "from wood to metal," just enough resistance in throat/back bore, and i can play seemingly for hours without needing much of a break. Ever since I switched, my 30H sits on the shelf, only to be taken down every once in a while to remind myself why I switched, or for a student to try out since they're becoming rarer.

I have also had success with the funnels Laskey 30H, 32H (larger diameter rim), a 30B which is a hybrid between the bowl & funnel cups, and a Laskey 30G, which is a bowl. Each did something very well, but of course that means that it was missing something somewhere else. For instance, when I used the Laskey 30G, i had been on the 30H for a few years and somehow ended up with a super dark & bland sound with fluffy articulations (btw, thanks to Derek Fenstermacher for pointing it out and helping me come back to clarity). The 30G brightened up my sound and clarified my articulations again and got that sound in my head and I was able to switch back to a 30H after retraining my "horn in my head."

I have heard of many different mouthpieces working with this tuba, as well as many not working. I think it depends on the player's strengths and weaknesses. I have always tried to find a mouthpiece that helps me a little with my weaknesses while maybe being a little deficient in an area that I do well so I can more easily get it to work all around. For me, the Olka CB2 is it.

If you are anywhere near NYC or northern NJ, I have tons of mouthpieces that I would gladly let you try on your instrument, as well as a Nirschl York for us to compare. I have had quite a few mods done to mine that I recommend that helped it play even better, but it has to be played to be believed.

What a great descriptor for something often hard to describe

As this subject evolves into the traditional Tubenet "I use _ and it's great" thread, I hope we'll occasionally remember that the requirement is apparently that the rim diameter be less than than the 30H's 32.9mm. That means a lot of popularly recommended mouthpieces are actually too big.

I don't have any suggestions. For that matter I'm kind of skeptical that there's any way to find anything in that size range - we can't measure rims consistently enough for a 0.015" difference to be reliably specified between different manufacturers, and players' experiences will vary depending on how they react with rim shape.

I have a Laskey 29H. It is one of two I know of in existence. I use it on a 4/4 Nirschl and find it suits quite well. So, even though not regularly available, the spec for it may exist with the new Laskey owners. Might be worth investigating (but I’d expect a serious wait...). Ed
