Folks,

I have searched high and low online for the Besson specific grime gutters and can't find anything about them. Where does one obtain these, other than by buying a horn that comes with them. Help is appreciated.

Basically, yes.

There are the rubber universal-fit ones that stretch across the bottoms of the valves, collecting "piston drool" in a layer of felt. The problem with these is that lots of gunk becomes, well, lots of old gunk, and wet felt makes a pretty good airtight seal against the bottom caps -- which can easily slow the valves down.

The Besson version is a metal tube, filled with felt-like material, that connects to nubs on the bottom valve caps. Much nicer solution.

The one that came with my 981 is not filled with felt but empty. Therefore I have to remember to empty it before putting the horn away. The amount of piston drool collected in a two-hour rehearsal is typically 5-8 mL. I would hate having to wipe all that liquid (or whatever precipitates it leaves when it dries) off the horn every day.

Have you tried contacting a Besson dealer (Dillons, I think) about ordering one. There was a lengthy discussion about these on another forum (Brass Forum) and I believe the poster found a place to order one.

I have one that came with my Besson 967 euph and I'm sure glad I have it!

Why order them ? Your electrician uses plastic covers for cable channels. He might have 6" of that in his trash can for you. These are of an open, semi- rectangular cross section and clip on a cable rig. They are formed to exert some inward tension if opened to a true rectangular shape. These are used in various sizes, so one kind just may clip on your valves. Most likely the valves won´t be aligned in a straight line, so you might have to saw out a triangular shaped slice, leaving one of the side walls intact, bend it so the gap closes and close the seam with some kind of glue.

Combined with napkins or cleenex, you have the perfect gunk collecting device with easy-to-dispose soaking pads.

Ahh, my friend, welcome to NEC (National Electrical Code) for the USA, as well as their partners in crime UL (Underwriter's Laboratories). Unlike in Europe, the litigious environment pushes our code to over-engineer (IEC vs. NEMA) a good bit of things. The closest thing we have here is a surface conduit made by a manufacturer called Wiremold, but most of the sizes, IIRC, would be incompatible with this usage.

I would try a piece of cardboard cut out to make a mold of sorts and then try something like that "Plasti-Dip" stuff and see if you can modify one that has enough of a gap to allow air in between the cap bottoms and the collection felt.

Yamaha makes one. I use one on my YEP-641 but I had to shorten it some to fit. Maybe it will fit your Besson? $22.

The Yamaha gutter is slotted differently - won't necessarily line up, depending on which model you are playing on.

Here is a UK outlet which stocks the Besson reservoirs. It will cost you an arm and half of a leg in shipping, but you can have one.
