Every once in a while, I get to work with (bass trombonist of renown) John Rojak. He doesn't like to "overthink" stuff like this, and - when someone is verbally pontificating re: intonation strategies in some detail (as I was completely guilty of doing, above), he might make a little face and quietly say (followed up by a closed-mouth smile), "Just play in tune."
