I could get along well with a conductor like this guy. Very clear with the stick.

He's great if he conducted like that in front of the London Symphony. It's way overdone in front of just 8 guys.

None of whom seemed to be paying close attention anyway.Alex C wrote:He's great if he conducted like that in front of the London Symphony. It's way overdone in front of just 8 guys.

Re: Conductor that I like
Seems to me that although the players didn't need him so much he helped the performance.
As many conductors do- his interpretive dance emphasized to the observer visually what the players were doing audibly!

Re: Conductor that I like
We had a sub conductor for a performance. During the warm up she kept asking my section to play louder.
THAT’S a conductor that I like!!

I wouldn't have watched him either. I think he added a huge amount of audience visual appeal, but I find that bounce at the ictus disconcerting and I would have put him in the LUFU category, if playing with a group that accomplished.

I personally prefer the ictus to be down - rather than up - and at a particular place whereby the stick LEAVES that place extremely quickly (rather than dwelling/flailing-around in that area for show)....

My favorite conductor is Shigeo Genda. A close second is Tatsuya Shimono.
