Yamaha Eb tuba parts compatibility--YEB–631 and YEB–632

Post by cjk »

I have a Yamaha 3+1 compensated E flat model YEB–631.
I'd like to have a second, longer main tuning slide without having to mess with the original.

I know that the YEB–631 main tuning slide is no longer orderable.

I know that the YEB–631 and YEB–632 share a lot of parts, but the main tuning slides are different part numbers.

The yamaha parts site is currently down for maintenance.

Does anyone have access to both models who could maybe swap the main slides and see if they fit? If they are interchangeable, can you tell the difference?

If you have a Yamaha YEB-632 EEb tuba and could measure some things for me even with a ruler, that might get me close to what I need to know.

From examining the parts lists, I'm fairly sure the bore sizes of both sides of the main tuning slides are the same on both models. The lengths of the tubes may be different which is totally fine. The main measurement I'm interested in is the length of the brace between the tubes on the main tuning slide of a YEB-632 EEb.

Is the YEB-631 that sharp usually? I noticed the one that Sam Gnagey sold a few weeks ago also had a lengthened tuning slide.

I pull out the tuning slide about an inch and a half normally. The slide tubing is only about 2.5 inches long. It does work fine. Mine is the only YEB-631 I have ever played, so I can't comment on what is normal, but that ad did get me thinking about this. I am guessing it's tuned to A=443.

Interesting. I have the BBb version, but I really don't play it well enough to know whether it tends to be sharp or not.

Bump.

I was hoping that someone could pull the main tuning slide out of their yeb-632 and measure the bore size of both sides of the slide and the distance between the main tuning slide tubes.

Anyone know anyone with a yeb-632 and a set of calipers?

my 631 E flat main tuning slide measures about so:

inner distance between the slide tubes with the main tuning slide pulled out of the tuba is 3.21 inches / 81.6mm.
outside diameter small side .805 inches / 20.49mm.
outside diameter large side .86 inches / 21.9mm.

inside diameter small side of tuning slide .768 inches / 19.5mm.
inside diameter large side of tuning slide .830 inches / 21mm.
