I was just wondering where I could find some jazzy tuba solos that are funn and challenging. Thanks for the help.

"Bill's Tune", by Joe Constantino and published by Kendor was written for me. It starts with a cadanza (some triple tongueing) and goes into a 3/4 ballad in c minor. From there it jumps to a c minor swing section, back to the ballad and out with another cadenza. It's listed in the NYSSMA manual as a level 5 and goes up to c above the staff. Audiences seem to like it. It's published with tuba and piano, but Joe wrote unpublished concert band parts. I usually perform it that way.

While some may disagree with this choice - I really like the unaccomp. "TubaTunes" by Frackenpohl. It requires a little foot tapping and slapping your horn, but this multi-movement piece is a crowd pleaser and is fun to practice and play. Takes a little bit of coordination.

Actually, I like anything that Frackenpohl wrote, esp. his brass quintet arrangemnts.

Jerry Lackey wrote a "Jazz Concerto" several years ago. It is available from him, with either piano reduction, symphony orchestra or (I believe) concert band parts. A "Whitepages.com" search for South Bend, IN will give you his contact info.
It's a nice piece and has plenty for a tuba technician to work on. I would have preferred to have seen "swing" eighth notes written instead of dotted-eighth-sixteenths in some places, though, but that's one of the few beefs I have with the piece.
I performed it with the piano part a few years ago, but I really like the sound of the fully orchestrated accompaniment. It's good fun.
