Six tubas at once? How fun must that have been!

Hi all,

First of all, forgive me, if you're not a history buff, for posting so much recently on matters related to tuba history. But hey, this quarantine situation is perfect for catching up on research when its a hobby!

Second, did you know that the great Patrick Gilmore, in his world-famous concert band, once featured six tubas at once?!

And did you further know that one of those six tuba players is perhaps one of the greatest of all time - except that most of us have never heard of him?

Check out my latest blog post: https://tubapastor.blogspot.com/2020/04 ... -once.html

Enjoy!
Dave

Dave, it's always good to see your posts and your scholarship about old tubas and players. Keep 'em coming. The Italian, Mirenda, is described as a monster player. I notice he enlisted in the Italian Army in 1871 and was fulfilled in 1879. That's an eight year enlistment, something I have never heard of. The kid must have been nuts to sign up for that length of time. Oh well, it seems to have worked out OK for him.

I get it, Dave. My pre-coronavirus section had seven tubas- all but one German or German-style, three of which are Alexanders. Yes, we have lots of fun!

Actually, the fun went beyond the size of the section, for Gilmore had all six of them play a solo in unison!

We did that a few years ago, on "Big Joe, The Tuba". Got a standing ovation!
