Has anyone tried on of these Griego Mouthpieces?

These are far from Bach stenciled mouthpieces.

I understand that Christan (not Christian) Griego works for one of the premier trombone designers. He began designing trombone and trumpet mouthpieces and recently added the tuba models.

The trombone and trumpet come built on an Art Deco and a New York style blank. The New York style may be the cause for thinking they are Bach stencils but let me assure you, they are not. The tuba mouthpieces at present are available only on the Art Deco blank.

I have played one of the mouthpieces and was impressed enough to order it.

If you are in the DFW area, there is supposed to be a demo-box headed our way for a display/demo at one of the local universities.

I came across the Griego booth at Tubonium up in Minnesota and really liked one of them for my F. Good registers and intonation. I'm playing on it now. My two cents for what it is worth.

I actually met Christian (who works for Edwards instrument company btw) in January at the Eastern Trombone Workshop. I'm primarily a tuba player, but I double on bass, so naturally that was what I was going for. I seemed to like the trombone mouthpieces very well. My trombonist in my quintet just bought an Edwards trombone and a Griego mpc. Before he had the new ax though, he had already bought the new piece. Even on his old trombone, the difference in sound quality was something unmatched to any other mouthpieces. The members in my quintet love the improved sound.

I'd be very curious to try out the tuba mouthpieces, but I can tell you from experience that these are fine quality mouthpieces. Christian really has put some great ideas into these mouthpieces, and overall I recommend you try one some time.

My 2.5 cents.

I had the opportunity to road test the Griego "E-flat" prototype as well as some other mouthpieces at TUBONIUM3 with Ross Tolbert. We thought that the Griego "E-flat" worked very well, offering a continuity and smoothness in transition as well as excellent low register response.

I was so impressed with the mouthpiece that I bought the E-flat prototype and use it with my Willson E-flat in the Madison Brass Band--the breadth of sound it offers helps me to blend with the strong bass trombonist and even stronger BB-flat tubist in the band.

I still use my DEG ME2 on most things, but it is nice to have options!

Check the Griego mouthpieces out when you get a chance.
