Lubricants Toxic?

Post by Ace »

Is it safe to breathe the fumes of lubricant oils for pistons and rotors?  I use Hetman's Light Piston Oil and a generic rotor oil I got from a local repair shop.  I cleaned and lubricated my instruments last week, played then everyday for several hours, and my bronchial area has felt a bit irritated since then.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

They certainly can irritate the lungs. Having asthma, I've always felt a bit of irritation especially in the Spring when my histamine levels are high.

I would experiment and see which oil will not cause irritation for you. Personally my worst experience was with using lamp oil. Also can’t stand that smell. I tried using berp bio oil on pocket trumpet and had to clean everything up due to some gunk buildup. But on such a small instrument it’s not a problem, I thoroughly cleaned it before and after changing oil type but wouldn’t try that on tuba, wouldn’t want to deal with cleaning that. I have tried few other brands before but I have best results with “Ultra Pure” which I use currently.

http://www.binak.com/dedication/" target="_blank" target="_blank was created because of the toxic nature of the hydrocarbons.

I think this explains what happened. I stopped practicing and felt better right away. Ha.
