Arban Methods

I am starting to work with a high school senior now, who is headed to be a music major next year. He is playing a BBb F. Schmidt 4+1 horn. I want him to buy an Arban. My personal Arban is the "Complete Conservatory Method for Tuba" by Arban/Roylance. This version has CC fingerings printed in various places.
Amazon has "Arban Complete Method for Tuba" by Arban/Young/Jacobs. I need to know if these two versions are the same, aside from the printed fingerings.
Thanks in advance...

I have both arban methods for tuba and can see no real difference between the two content wise. The Roylance version is clearly the cheaper of the two.As the Jacobs version is spiral bound it is much easier to use than the Roylance edition which is bound like a book and does not sit flat on the stand making it very difficult to use.I asked the same question back in November and got no response.

Thank you for your response. I suspected that they would be the same book, except the differences in BBb or CC fingerings, and the binding.

Do not underestimate the importance of the binding, regardless of price. Wire binding is MUCH better.

If you wind up with Arban Jacobs Young, I’d get it direct from Encore Publishing.

I have the 1996 version published by Encore of "Arban Complete Method for the Tuba" edited by Jerry Young and Wes Jacobs. This early edition is written it key signatures geared toward CC tubas. On page #4 it states "This volume was prepared with the CC tuba in mind. It may be used, of course, by tubists who use instruments in any key, but Arban's original fingering patterns will be present for the CC tubist only. Perhaps future editions of this text will be possible that preserve the exact Arban patterns for tubas in other keys". I'm not certain if Encore's newer editions of the Complete Method cover BBb fingering patterns in the exercises. However, Encore has a "Preparatory Book for the Complete Method for BBb Tuba". You might find that for your BBb student, that this book is an excellent introduction to Arban's Complete Method at a very affordable cost.

That BBb Arban Prep book frequently comes with an offer to “trade up” to the complete method with full credit applied to the upgrade, FYI
Amazon is a mess.

Thank you. I was unaware of the prep book. I will look into it.

Is there a reason to not just play my trombone Arban’s down an octave?

Or if you can read treble clef, the cornet version is public domain on IMSLP.
If you insist on playing high notes on tuba (always seemed strange to me) Pops Mclaughlin has rewritten everything in multiple keys higher and higher - now its about 950 pages. Free download, or used to be anyway.

There is a *newer* complete Arban for trombone that was edited by Joe Alessi, if you want a version in Bb. Then, like many of us when we were students, simply read it down an octave.

Thanks. I think I want this guy to use the Arban tuba book. As he progresses, I will supplement with a trombone study that he can read down an octave.

I found a PDF with my Scribed.com subscription, which is 41 pages, but it starts on page 8. Is that consistent with your Arban-Prescott book?

Yes. That is where I have started him. Good alternative on the price.

Four points.
Is there an F tuba Arban?
The original treble clef cornet method - 'The Bible' - obviously is perfect for Eb tuba - reading it as if bass clef plus 3 sharps. I blindly went through it once from the first page to the last as written and then again one half tone sharp. That was 50 years ago. [The Carnival is really good for your soul played in the equivalent of 6 sharps.] I did not say I played it well the second time through - fortunately no one could hear me. I seem to remember it was in a basement storeroom in a student hostel in Frankfurt. Don't even ask.
If you play the cornet tutor on a CC or BBb reading it exactly as written as if bass clef - adding 3 sharps - you obviously polish up your upper register and any fingering problems really force you to learn to cope. I never tried on a BBb and half a tone higher. That crazy I am not.
But an attendant point is the ubiquitous use of the transcriptions of the Bach Cello Suites for tuba. I really cannot understand this. Their whole usefulness is stretching the advanced player. I believe that John Fletcher always played them as originally written for cello. I do not sense any greater difficulty in altissimo on an F, Eb, CC or BBb, provided that horn 'allows' those notes. I have played many F and Ebs on which the octave above middle c is far more difficult than on good CCs or BBbs. You just roll your lips in like a jazz trumpeter etc etc. Yes, you heard it all before.

I have the 1st and 2nd year Arban's book (always wondered about the 3rd and 4th year). I have had it for so long the price on the cover is $1.25 LOL. I play BBb (i can play all keys I just prefer the BBb breadth of tone) and have both the Young/Jacobs Arban and the Mantia trombone Arban. The Mantia Arban is much easier on my fingers but there is not as much content as the Young/Jacobs. In the near future, I will be purchasing the Alessi/Bowman version for trombone.
