The Guilford Town Band just released this virtual band video, which came out pretty good. If you look closely at the right moments you'll see Gary Buttery behind his seven-valve Alexander F tuba, and me with my black tiger.

Correction: That was Fred Young, 89 years old, still playing his BBb-EEEb double tuba!

At 2:48 there is a tuba in the bottom left corner - is that Gary - or is Gary in the bottom right corner? The one on the right looks more like the Dr. Young tuba - definitely not the Alex. The shot on the left isn't clear enough to make out what instrument it is but, it seems too big.

I am especially interested in this as I once owned the Alex after Jake convinced me to accept it in a trade for a very nice 5 valve Alex.

That is great. I have been working on a video for the past month for our band. We were supposed to do a Sousa concert in March, so we decided to try Semper Fi. Let’s just say the results have been mixed. Only about 1/3 of the band has shown any interest in participating. And the quality has been somewhat mixed. Some people nailed the time with the click track and others didn’t. And the one tuba player why sent me a video died of a heart attack a week later. He was 86. So we hope to be able to publish something soon.

Not only was it a great performance by each and every musician, the video compilation/production was fantastic. Thanks for sharing!

At a performance by Alchemy/US Coast Guard tuba quartet, Gary received this question from an audience member:

"Your tuba appears to have 7 valves. What do they do?"

"It does??" Gary replied, right on cue.

Yes, it was Fred Young himself on his double tuba. A friend of a friend forwarded the invitation to him. His son informs me that Fred polished it up just for this performance. Fred is 89 now, and I am honored to be in the same video with him!

As a practical matter, are computers and phones consistent enough these days that you can use a bunch of tracks submitted from an unknown collection of devices and have the time and pitch match up?

Apparently they are. The performers on the Stars & Stripes video used whatever devices they had to record their parts while listening to a recording of a really good performance found on You-tube. The individual video recordings were all uploaded to a dropbox, and some very skilled folks spent a lot of time assembling the final product, with amazing results.
